Industry: Wireless Devices & OEM Branding
From 2010–2013, ZTEUSA was a little-known Chinese OEM in the U.S. wireless market. T-Mobile, one of its main carrier partners, sold ZTE devices only as white-labeled products. Branding was virtually invisible—consumers could only find “made by ZTE” printed under the battery. T-Mobile leadership resisted adding an unfamiliar OEM brand to its shelves, concerned that low awareness could hurt sales and customer perception. ZTE’s own leadership had never invested heavily in U.S. product launches, further limiting momentum.
To change the dynamic, both ZTE and T-Mobile needed proof of commitment. For ZTE, that meant unprecedented marketing investment. For T-Mobile, it meant giving ZTE branding a chance. The turning point was realizing that a high-profile launch—done right—could shift perceptions overnight, provided it generated enough media buzz to make the brand feel established from day one.
The plan centered on an unprecedented New York City press event to launch the ZTE ZMAX phablet—something ZTE had never attempted in the U.S.
By breaking precedent with both investment and approach, the ZTE ZMAX launch turned an anonymous OEM into a recognized brand in U.S. carrier channels, generating hundreds of millions of impressions and paving the way for half a billion in follow-on sales.
